Alexander creates collections of prospective artworks, which explore different themes, frequently pertaining to human nature and experience. Employing a number of different furniture making techniques, he takes old crafts and brings them into a contemporary space, creating sculptural pieces appropriate for a range of interior locations.
Ebb & Flow (2025)
Growth, queerness and change are central themes for the artist in these sequential explorations, with time seemingly the axis on which they sit and unfold.
Incremental change is evident from one vessel to the next, with colour playing an important role in the evolution of each sequence; a visual language being created between form and appearance, liminally connected through the glass plinth they rest on.
Woodturning allows access to these timelines in a physical way, whereby the process of creation reflects the expression. In turning vessels, Alexander is removing material, looking to reveal something more light and colourful from the harder piece of timber begun with, as if it was always contained within. They are hopeful in nature, a theme the artist considers important in a world fraught with challenging external events.
Alexander’s approach brings woodturning into the modern context, offering a different perspective on this ancient craft. Using natural materials, water based stains and a respect for the process of making, he strikes balance between the old and new, and what’s valuable to bring forward, resulting in sculptural pieces which are fresh and contemporary.
