Alexander creates collections of prospective artworks, which explore different themes, frequently pertaining to human nature and experience. Employing a number of different furniture making techniques, he takes old crafts and brings them into a contemporary space, creating sculptural pieces appropriate for a range of locations.
Ebb & Flow (2025)
Rooted in explorations of growth, queerness, and change, these sequential works seemingly evolve over the invisible axis of time. Drawn out over a wide landscape, clear, incremental shifts occur from one vessel to the next, driven heavily by the role of form, colour, and repetition. This progression establishes a striking visual language between physical form and surface appearance, liminally connected by the glass plinths that support them.
For Alexander, woodturning offers physical access to these timelines, allowing the act of making to reflect the emotional expression. Through the subtractive process of turning, he removes material to unveil something inherently lighter, more elegant, and vibrant from the raw, unwrought material he begins with—exposing a form that felt pre-contained within the wood.
This approach recontextualises an ancient craft for the contemporary world. Working with natural materials and water-based stains, Alexander balances tradition with innovation, distilling what is essential to bring forward into fresh, succinct sculptural objects. The capacity to rearrange or twist these forms invites playful interaction, offering the opportunity to create arrangements with a different energy.
